Welcome to the new year! January is the cold dead of winter here. But there’s also a feeling of newness and potential. The days are starting to get longer as we slowly drift towards spring. This first month of the year always feels like a reset like anything could happen.
Usually in the first week of this month I like to set out some time to do a new year tarot pull. One card for each month of the year to help me look ahead and do some planning. The 2023 tarot card is The Chariot, asking us to take action and control, to forge ahead with our plans. It reminds us that with determination and follow through, we can be successful in reaching our goals.
This is also the month when we order our seeds for spring! chosing what plants we’re going to grow is always exciting. Even if you aren’t planting your own garden this year, think about what you might want to grow in your life, happiness, boundaries, creativity? With the Chariot as the card of the year, remember that you have the reigns and anything is possible.
New Year Ritual:
Find your personal 2023 tarot card
For this ritual you don’t even need a tarot deck, but if you do have one, pull out the collective year card, #7 The Chariot, and your personal year card once you calculate it
If you don’t have a deck, you can look up an image and meanings of your card online! Biddy Tarot is one of my favorite online resources.
Find your personal 2023 tarot card. To do this you’ll add the month and date of your birth to the current year, 2023. So if your birthday is October 4 this would be 10 +4 +2023 = 2037 break this down by adding together 2 +0 +3 +7 = 12 this corresponds to the major arcana card #12, The Hanged Man.
All year cards should fall between 1-21 to correspond to a major arcana card, so if you get a number over 21, break it down even further by adding those numbers together to get a number in that range. For example, if you get 22, break it down even further, 2 + 2 = 4, or The Emperor card.
Compare your personal year card to the collective year card, #7 The Chariot, and think about how to embrace this energy throughout the new year!
